This month’s review will concentrate on the FN poly-pistol that utilizes the 5.7mm x 28mm round. If you haven’t looked at or seen on of these babies, you just have to. At just over 20 ounces unloaded it features excellent ergonomics, high fire power and magazine capacity. With its full size 4.8 inch barrel it is deadly accurate even to this untalented shooter. The gun features fully adjustable sights, poly frame and slide, and a smooth and predictable trigger pull.
I was blown away by this gun. Last Sunday I took a trade-in up to the Casa De Tazze Mountain for some live fire testing. At 25 yards freehand I could hit a six inch target bull’s eye about half the time. (This is good for me) Rapid fire with the single action trigger actually increased my accuracy. Twenty rounds of the potent 5.7x28mm blue tipped “sporting” rounds in the magazine leads me to believe there might not be a better defensive weapon for the average shooter or smaller framed person (woman). At the current price of $.55 per round, this is even affordable to practice with. The recoil was no greater than a 22 magnum, the slide release is well placed for even smaller hands and the safety is perfectly placed and is ambidextrous.
A little research on the 5.7x28mm on Wikipedia will reveal amazing facts about the ballistics. While not commercially available there are amour-piercing rounds available on Gun Broker. Expensive, but I have to believe these babies can penetrate auto doors at the very least.
This gun is a featured item on Gun Genie in October which can be accessed through our website. You can go there, order one for delivery through our shop. The gun comes with case, and three lightweight poly magazines.
After trying this gun I have to go back to my workshop and built an AR Platform using this 5.7x28mm round. With a 50 round magazine available, this may be the perfect tandem of pistol and rifle. While the PS-90 Carbine is available from FN for around $1,700, a custom built AR should be closer to $1,000. If you are interested in one being built, let me know.
